Making Pie with Kids and See the USA - Kids Cook with Books

While my husband finds it hard to believe, I am not a cake person.  But Pie. That’s where my heart is – a light flaky crust, filled with a juicy, slightly tart fruity filling.  Not only is pie a delicious way to celebrate the bounty of the season, but it also takes a bit of work to prepare – so it’s lucky that you have access to some little hands to help you!  Measuring, mixing, and rolling are all wonderful activities for your kids to help with – and they all improve their fine and gross motor skills at the same time!

I probably don’t need to convince you to make pie. It speaks for itself.  But this book brings pie to a new level of cool.  Not only does it provide you with a delicious pie recipe, but it takes you on a journey around the USA to get all of the supplies you will need for the job!  Need a cake pan? This book shows you where the raw materials come from to make stainless steel.  How about oven mitts? Go on a journey to the cotton fields!  From Alaska to New Hampshire, you’ll see where the raw materials come from to do everyday tasks and get a picture for how they are made. It certainly gives an appreciation of the workers and natural resources involved in the subtleties of our daily lives.

Before we get started in the kitchen, I wanted to give you some of my favorite online pie resources.  If you have never made pie dough before, don’t be afraid! It’s not as difficult as you might imagine!

  • My friend Jennie is a pie queen and has been making a pie a day this year! She’ll often make a batch of dough, keep it in the freezer, and then use it for hand pies, full dessert pies, or even savory pies for dinner!  You can find some of her her pie recipes here.
  • If you truly can’t muster the courage to make your own pie crust, there are lots of other delicious fruity desserts you can make that are almost pie, such as crisps, crumbles and cobblers.

Featured Recipe for How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the USA

Apple Crisp  

Ingredients

8 tart apples
2 Tbs. sugar
1/3 c butter
1/2 c brown sugar
1 c flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice the apples into a large pie plate or a 9×9 inch pan, layering with sugar.
  2. Make the topping by cutting all ingredients with a pastry blender or fork.
  3. Distribute the topping evenly over the top of the apples.
  4. Cover and bake at 375 for 30 minutes with the top on.
  5. Remove the cover and bake an additional 15 minutes.

Serves: 6

CALL THE KIDS:

  • If you have an apple/peeler/corer/slicer, the kids can turn the handle to slice the apples.
  • Sprinkle apples with sugar
  • Measure brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt
  • Mash dry ingredients and butter with 2 forks
  • Spread topping over the apples

    My first grader and I just made this for dinner (I wanted to make a pie, but we were short on apples and time). Nice and simple, and pretty tasty. Since my apples were sweet, we left out the sugar sprinkled directly on the apples. And we halved the recipe since I only had four apples. Next time I would definitely throw some oatmeal in the mix. We love oatmeal. 🙂
