For the second year in a row, I attended the International Association of Culinary Professionals annual conference. Much like last year’s experience in Portland, this year’s event in Austin opened its arms wide and greeted me with a smile.
I came to town early for my first ever bookstore appearance (yay!). The staff at Book People were wonderful and we were easily able to draw families to our area of the store by offering a hands on cooking activity for children. An added bonus for me, of course, was a visit from friends.
One of the brightest highlights of the conference was our Kids in the Kitchen workshop. Last year, we worked with 4H students in Portland to cook a meal for the homeless. This year we harvested veggies with students from UT Elementary School and cooked a meal together at the Whole Foods Market Culinary Center. Not only were the students excited to cook with members of the IACP, but they were overjoyed that Bill Yosses, White House Pastry Chef, came to participate as well.
We used fresh seasonal veggies from the garden to prepare a delicious menu. The children practiced knife skills, learned to make a raspberry vinaigrette, sauteed a chard and potato medly, and flexed their muscles by making a delicious dessert topped with fresh whipped cream.
It’s no wonder that I am suffering from Post Conference Depression Syndrome.
