After School

At this time, we are not offering any after school classes.  Owner, Michelle Stern, has returned to her roots to teach high school biology.  We will update this page if our staffing situation changes and become available.

What’s Cooking with Kids offers after school cooking programs for preschool, elementary and middle school aged children in Marin County and other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.  Our classes are hands-on, and take advantage of seasonal and locally grown ingredients, whenever possible.  Our classes aren’t just fun – they are educational, too!  Each contains curricular components that are included in the California State Framework Standards for Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Health.

If we do not offer our after school program in your geographical area, we are happy to offer consultations and lesson plans to help you get started with cooking classes for children in your school or recreation center.  We can also train your after-care staff to conduct simple cooking classes for their students.

If you would like to add fun, healthy and educational cooking classes to your after-school program, please contact us.

Additional information:

  • Most of our after school classes take place on your school’s campus.
  • Classes last for approximately an hour.
  • Fall, Winter and Spring sessions are offered, each lasting between 6 – 12 weeks.
  • These programs typically meet weekly, but alternative arrangements can be made to suit your schedule.
  • Accommodations will be made to honor dietary restrictions for students and religious school kitchens.

Workshops can be arranged during the school day for home-schooling families and groups.  Please contact us for more information.

I have worked with Michelle Stern and her Certified Green Company “What’s Cooking” for the past 3 years.  Michelle’s knowledge of Cooking, Nutrition and teaching methods along with her skill in and understanding of Child Development have set her program apart.   Her highly-trained and professional teaching staff is a wonderful mix of professional chefs, trained cooks and folks with Early Childhood Education background.  They make her program one of the most successful afterschool classes we offer.  The balanced curriculum combines small motor skill development, science, mathematics, reading and interactive fun that keeps the children focused on what they are learning while allowing them to have the fun experience of cooking something themselves.  Parents report that their child leaves the class with a love of cooking, desire to help at home and a new tendency for trying new and different foods.  I love working with Michelle and her staff at What’s Cooking, and I could not recommend her curriculum more highly! ~ San Rafael Recreation Center
