It’s tempting to make this a wordless post – to let the photographs speak for themselves. Cadette Scouts creating an Asian extravaganza in the kitchen is quite a site to behold. They are eager, hungry, and excited to play with their food. Yes, 12 year olds like to play with their food.

Sushi with purple rice!
We decided to make the Purple Rice from my book, The Whole Family Cookbook, instead of plain white sushi rice. And the girls went to town on some sushi. One pair even made a sushi roll so big that we thought it would never stick together. But it did – complete with cream cheese, avocado, cucumber and smoked salmon. Pure heaven, I tell you.

Making Thai Spring Rolls
Not only did the girls get exposed to a few new ingredients, such as miso paste, but they worked collaboratively, dug out some ancient and woody carrots from my garden and also fed food scraps to my backyard chickens. They got a good grasp of what it is like to have a garden to table experience – and that rocked!

That is awesome! So great when kids take ownership of what they put in their bodies. I’m amazed at how many children don’t know what to do in a kitchen other than heat something in the microwave.
Sounds like so much fun!
Making sushi is so much fun, I’m glad the girls had a good time.
Great post! What a fun activity to do – and the purple rice makes the sushi even prettier!
YOu have the best ideas! I can’t wait to do sushi with my little guy. The purple rice is beautiful!
Love this post… It’s such a fun activity!
