Fun Passover Seder with Kids

We celebrated the first night of Passover at our friend's house.  We have celebrated the holiday with them several years in a row and laughed when their 7 year old daughter said we were "like cousins that we see every year at Passover."  I thought I'd mix things up a little this year.  I brought my trusty Bag of Plagues, and scattered them all over the table for our (thankfully) brief ceremony. And for some exciting news... A publishing house told me today that they are interested in my book...

What's Cooking with YOUR Kids: Valentines From S...

Many thanks to my friend Colleen, from Foodie Tots, for sharing this adorable story about cooking for Valentine's Day with her son.  Yes, I realize that I am nearly 2 months too late with this post - but to be fair, your submissions go into a queue in the order they are received.  But you can make special love-treats any time! My son, like your typical 3.5-year-old, is very into construction, trucks, trains, and all things that go. He's been cooking with me from an early age, but as he gets...

School Lunch Reform – Our second meeting

As we walked into our second school lunch advisory meeting last night, we were met with trays of breakfast items that are currently being served in our school district.  In my eagerness to capture our entire journey of school food reform, I snapped a few photos, so that you can see the sugary, package-laden place that we are starting from. I wondered if I should have hidden some boxing gloves in my purse, in case the battle over whether or not we would continue serving “Honey Buns” got heated…...

Cooking with Toddlers: "C" is for Cucu...

We continue to eat our way through the alphabet with my Mommy/Caregiver and Me preschool cooking classes at the local recreation center.  We made applesauce the first week (the recipe will be on Bostonmamas soon).  I was out of town (at the Natural Products Expo) the following week, but my pal Maya made Banana Pancakes with the kiddos.  This week is brought to you by the letter "C."  And much to the dismay of the students, we didn't make cake.  Or cookies.  Or candy... “C” is for Cucumber Cucumber...

Is the term "Foodie" a Load of Hooey?

Up until recently, I have looked at the word “foodie” with a bit of disdain.  Honestly, I didn’t know what to make of it.  Perhaps it will reveal too much about how my rudimentary brain works if I tell you that rhyming words popped into my mind… Cutie Patootie, A Load of Hooey, Snooty… Usually, it seems that most of the people who use the word are talking about people who care about food and where it comes from.  Even so, I couldn’t shake the idea that the term had an air of snobbery...

What’s Cooking with YOUR Kids: Fish Tacos

Many thanks to my friend Kathleen, from Dinner Together, for her story about cooking with her girls. I have three daughters and each of them is completely different in the kitchen.  My oldest, who is 14, has very little interest in food or in learning to cook.  She'll do what I ask her to do, but unlike her sisters, she rarely asks to help.  I hope to get a little more training in for her, though, before she heads out into the world of cooking for herself.  My youngest daughter (age 8)...

Tips for Battling Childhood Obesity: I was on th...

It's a small world.  What are the odds that of the 7 times I was on ABC's View From the Bay, two of them would be the same as Rona Renner, radio show host and nurse extraordinaire.  Imagine my surprise when I saw her in the green room a second time...It felt as if the stars aligned and we were meant to get to know each other. Rona is passionate about parenting issues and hosts a radio show called Childhood Matters.  She loves the work that I do with children and their families about healthy eating...

What's Cooking with YOUR Kids - Pretzel Bit...

I was so excited to see Maria's story about making pretzels with her neighbor's kids on Twitter.  Of course, I was even more excited when she agreed to share it with you on my blog.  Can you believe I have never made pretzels?  It's time I tried.  For sure. ------------------------------ Every week I teach a cooking class to two kids in my neighborhood.  The kids are in third and fourth grade-one girl and one boy. They are so much fun! The boy has a chef's coat and the girl wears the cutest...

Are School Lunches Making Our Kids Sick?

One of my heroes... I realize that this is depressing...do you have ideas for how we can deal with these issues? I'd love to hear about them - it helps to be a squeaky wheel.

Cars-Themed Recipe: Step on the Gas Baked Beans

One of the most popular cooking class series that we teach is called Recipes from Books and Movies.  In honor of my friend Amy, who recently came to town compliments of Bush's Beans, I thought I'd share this class favorite.
