Halloween Cooking Projects with Kids

It came as no surprise when my son’s 2nd grade class “party parent” called to ask if I would lead a food project at their Halloween party.  Of course I agreed, and set to work to find something healthy that the kids would not only have fun making, but would love to eat as well.

I settled on an oldie-but-goodie, Monster Paws (gloves filled with popcorn and candy corn finger nails) but wanted one more simple idea.  I decided to try making some Banana Ghosts that my pal Aviva created with her son.  They were a huge hit!

Try making Banana Ghosts with your kids.

  1. Cut a banana in half, lengthwise, and have your kids peel the pieces
  2. Insert a popsicle stick into the flat (cut) end
  3. Poke the pointy sides of two chocolate chips into the banana for eyes
  4. Devour!

Do you have a healthy Halloween treat that your kids love to make and eat?

  1. Michelle,

Those look like great fun. We were up at a farmers’ market in a northern suburb making Bug Salsa, Tortilla Spikes and Witches Brew. The kids really loved it! http://littlelocavores.blogspot.com/2009/10/frightful-holiday.html

That’s such a great idea! I love the banana ghosts. Maybe it would actually get my daughter to finish a banana.

  3. Thanks for the link to your post, Melissa! That sounds like lots of fun. It is so much fun to see what my like-minded pals are up to in the proverbial kitchen!

Mariko – yes, give these a try with your daughter. The kids all loved them – the chocolate chips helped, I am sure!

  4. The monster paws are winners — I’m going to pass that idea to my grandkids.
