Scream Sorbet Brings Produce Full Circle

Today I took the students from my cooking summer camp on a field trip to the farmer’s market.  The kids were fascinated by the concept that organic produce is better for our bodies and the planet.  So, they asked every vendor they met if their produce was organic.  Of course, when they met the sorbet guy from Scream, they asked him a few questions and then proceeded to be a bunch of free-loaders and taste all of his flavors.

Here, the Scream guy explains how his products are local, organic and sustainable.

Food for thought…

The perception of kids never ceases to amaze me.  My students asked a blueberry farmer if his berries were organic.  He said they weren’t “officially organic” but that he used organic farming practices. One of my students said, “so we just have to take your word for it then, since nobody checks to be sure?”

  1. Ha, love the question about organic blueberries. That’s why I’m tired of all the organic bashing lately. It may be imperfect, but what else is verified at all?

    Hi Colleen,
I know, I hate the bashing too. It was adorable, though – he said to me later – “he looked trustworthy!”

Almost every non-organic vendor we talked to complained of the pricing of the certification – said they did all the work and didn’t want to pay all of their profits for the “label”.

If you ever visit, I am feeding you some of this sorbet!
